Robert W. Briggs

briggs_robert@bellsouth.net

My name is Robert Briggs and I am the grandson of Ida A Turner Stephenson in which I call Nonnie. I regret to inform the Class of 1955 that she, Nonnie, passed away on May 7, 2008. She was a loving grandmother, mother, and friend to so many. She always spoke kind and memorable words of AHS and her time she spent there. Since graduating from AHS, she was a hair stylist for many years, then she worked in the Tax Assessor's Office from wh! ich she retired and then became a Church Secretary for North Shreve Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA in which she later retired. Nonnie was also became an active member of FBC Blanchard, LA where she helped with AWANAS, active in Sunday School and loved singing in the Voices of Praise Sanctuary Choir. Nonnie passed away from a bout with lung cancer and COPD. She died peacefully in her daughter's home (my mother) with all of her family around.

Denver, CO

csa123@msn.com

OBITUARY: Lynn DeJuan Abel, born December 9, 1936, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2007, while traveling in France.

As an accomplished life-long musician, playing the accordion and many other instruments, DeJuan attended Denver University's Lamont School of Music, and sang barbershop as a long time member of SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America). After service in the US Marine Corp 1957-1960 he earned his college degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. As the founder of Hexagon Honeycomb Corporation he became a modern day industrialist, epitomizing entrepreneurial ambition and independence by developing that company into the world wide leader in the production and distribution of structural paper honeycomb. He was presented the St. Louis Small Business Association Businessman of the Year Award in 1991.

He passionately loved travel, conversation (with anyone), and his family, which for him extended to second and third degree relatives, with all of whom he managed to maintain active contact. De Juan married Carol Ann Coniff in 1960, and had two sons, Corey Steven Abel and Andrew Craig Abel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver J. and Willie Abel of Clarendon, Texas, his older brother, Billy Dan Abel, and his sister, Donna. He is survived by his former wife Carol Abel of Arizona; his son Corey Abel and wife Jenni Jordan Abel, and their children, Audrey Lyn and Oliver Emmett of Denver, Colorado; his son Andrew ("Andy") Abel of La Rochelle, France; his brother, Philip C. Abel of Ft. Worth, Texas; and his long time companion Krisztina Toth and her son Daniel Antmann; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

To all who knew him he was a devoted father, uncle and friend. May he rest in peace. Visititation scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 5-7 PM; Funeral services scheduled for Sunday, April 22, at 2:00 PM at the Greer Funeral Home in Mangum, OK, with interment at the Ladessa Cemetery, Greer County Oklahoma.

The reunion was incredible. Many thanks to all those hardworking people who made it such a success. It was great to see so many old friends and I'm so happy I was able to attend. I've been traveling all over the world since last Sept: South Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, etc. In a few days I'm off to South America (Chile, Argentina, and Brazil). I'd love to hear from some of the people I was so fortunate to see at the reunion. If there will ever be another one, I will definitely come to Amarillo for it!!

Thank you for a terrific wedsite! Hurricane Rita prevented my attending our 50th. I love the book of our class. I made a scrapbook of my school years to share. Maybe I will attend my sister, Carolyn's 50th next year bringing it along. I live on Lake Travis near Austin with my husband, Bob and have a small b&b nearby. I taught English for 42 years including nine in Washington, DC in the '60s. I was married to Tom Cole (class of '49) for 16 years, deceased 2000); we had one son, JT. We enjoy three grandboys who live in Pearland.

Our 50th will be remembered because so many people wanted it to be the best yet. I think they succeeded!! I'm proud to be numbered with this AHS CLASS! Special thanks to Daniels, Bechtol, Collins, Lynch, Epps, and other team mates who were there. Note to reunion committee: This e-mail address is a new one. Please make changes on address records. Thanks

October 16th, 2005 Well, it's all done and over! What a great reunion! I know the reunion committee enjoyed the event every as much as those who attended! Helen and I have been fortunate to attend and help plan all the reunions, and without a doubt, this one tops them all. I just would like to thank all those who worked so hard on this committee and provided other assistance and resources to assist us. I saw so many friends and classmates that I have not seen in many years. It was like a step back in time! Thanks also to Wendy and Stanly Marsh for opening their home to us for the Friday night bash! It was great! Hope to keep in touch with everyone in the future. Terry Gamblin

A SUPER "Thank You!" to the reunion committee for preparing such a great environment for rekindling the memories of those AHS years, and building updates on lives that have meant so much to us. From the accommodations, the registration process, the picture-nametags, & the hospitality room (with slideshow), to the tour of the new AHS (and its art), the fantastic evening at Toad Hall, the Ballroom Dinner, and the very-special Memorial Service ...everything calls for a huge "WELL DONE!!!" So much to recall, remember, and cherish. I was very impressed with the special way spouses, family and friends who ventured there with us were warmly included. I've really enjoye! d hearing Barbara tell our family and non-AHS friends how well it was done and much she enjoyed it. It was tough at the end of the time together to say those "farewells" and "so longs." Somehow, "good-bye" seemed too final. I know a lot of us hope that another get-together opportunity is not out of the question. Again...Committee...Well Done!!

Our 50th Reunion was wonderful! What a joy to see not only the faces I've kept up with over the years, but so many that I hadn't seen for half a century. I missed you all this time, but didn't even realize it! Thanks to everyone who thought about not coming but did anyway. Your presence made it perfect. A huge bouquet to the planners who feared no one would show but got ready for us anyway. You did the best job! We all felt welcome. It was a warm and very special time -- even my husband enjoyed it. We have lots of pictures and many memories.

To those who made our grand occasion possible: The overworked adjective “awesome” best describes the result of your work for our 50-year reunion. From the moment we arrived, we saw that every detail had been anticipated, and your precise planning was carried out beautifully. It’s obvious that you gave it your all. I know of no way to adequately say thank you—to Billy Fred and M.J. for chairing the Reunion Committee, to Tricia for the yearbook that I’m still poring over with delight, to Wendy and Stanley for the eye-popping party at their unique and gracious home, and to every single one of you who worked so hard that I fear you could not have had as much fun as we homecoming visitors.! It was absolute joy to see and get reacquainted with our classmates. Once I overcame the shock of seeing so much “blonde” hair and a few other related changes, familiar eyes and smiles made the years evaporate, and there we were, the same “kids” we always were. Thank you for a memory we’ll cherish forever!

My husband and I enjoyed the 50th HS reunion. Thank you to all of the committee that made possible such a well organized, memorable reunion. We'll always remember the gracious way the Marsh family invited all of us into their home. It provided an ideal place to renew old friendships and make new acquaintances. The food and drink was delightful. The menu planning and swift serving methods on Saturday night were appreciated, too. Even the huge picture taking was fun. Sincerely, Pat Cunningham Vaughn

Gene, this is the best website that I have seen. I want to think every one for having such a good time, and a well planned reunion. It was a good time to set around and to reminisce threw all the years past. My prayers go out to the ones that were on the memorial list. Hope to have another one any time.

Kudos to everyone on the planning committee for an outstanding reunion. Your untold hours of work resulted in a wonderful event, and as unforseen glitches usually accompany a "big party" like this, you handled them with great finesse. It was such a treat to see my classmates, some of whom date to our days in Lee Bivins and Nixson. I so enjoyed visiting with everyone. Also, special thanks to Stanley and Wendy Marsh for their generosity in hosting such a wonderful party Friday night. Lastly, I am so grateful to our webmaster, Gene, for such a great website. As I mentioned before, I have shared it with my two children (both former Sandies) and one of my grandchildren (currently a San! die--3rd generation!) and they have enjoyed it as well. Deepest thanks to all of you!

Fellow graduates - It was great feeling so welcomed at the reunion by so many folks who remembered me despite the fact that I only entered AHS in my junior year. The "Wilson School Gang" were particularly gracious. I always thought that I blended with the wall paint in the hallways and classrooms. My thanks go to all who did such a great job with the program and organization of a large and extensive celebration.. especially Helen Gamblin and the very generous hosts, Stanley and Wendy of Toad Hall (who felt connected to us in spite of not having graduated with us). I also want to thank the Marshes for their art commissions which have made Amarillo a richer place to be (and with a wonderful sense of fun). I'm so glad that I decided to finally attend a reunion; it was the last chance. Finally, thank you Mrs. Walton (wherever you are) for inspiring my interest in physics and mathematics as my most beloved teacher ever. Good health and rich lives to all, Van

Well, best laid plans and so forth. It seems that if it isn't one thing it is another. I had grand plans for the reunion, that is until hurricane Katrina and Rita moved a bunch of relatives in with us. I did not dare go off for a pleasure trip when half the family was suffering. No, I must stay here and suffer with them. Hopefully some of them will be leaving in a few days. All our visitors are tired, I am tired but we shall over come this. Hopefully we will be able to converse in a normal humane way in three or four years. I am thinking of moving to North Dakota so this won't happen again. Have a great reunion and believe me, I will be thinking of you.

To those of you who remember my lil brother, Pat Pollard as a short little boy in school, you should see him now. He is a very handsome, tall, white headed man who is very devoted to his large family. He has been married now for 47 years to a wonderful lady named Judy. They have 4 beautiful children. He is a very loving grandfather and now has one great grandchild. He owned a old Dutch mansion in New York on the Hudson River and restored it. Won a award from the City of New York for that. From there they moved to hills of Butler Tennessee to a old log cabin with no running water and a outhouse and had a stream running along the side of the house. One time I went to see them in our! camper and got up the wrong hollor and this man and woman are walking up the road and we are walking back down and i asked him "if he knew where Pat Pollard lived", he thought for a minute and said, "oh you mean them people from New York" and i said yes. Then he said 'oH them Yankees from New York" i said yes again and he said pointing his finger to the other hollor, they live over in the other hollor" They were pulling a donkey with a rope and neither one had a tooth in their head. After we got in the right hollor and i told Pat what had happened, he said "my gosh Barbara, it's a wonder you didn't get your head blown off cause he has a still and sells Corn Whiskey at the bottom of the road at night". That was in his hippie days. They finally left there and moved to Richmond Va. and their they remain happy as can be. Three years ago he retired as a school teacher and he told me "the thing he missed the most were the children". No wonder he is such a great grandfather . Due to a death in the family, her was here for three days just 2 weeks ago, that is why he isn't coming back for the reunion and i think he would have enjoyed seeing everyone again,

Pats sis,

Barbara

I got a haircut today, plan to take a bath on Friday a.m., got my travel pill box packed, and I'm "on my way, the bright and shinny way, I'm on the 'Sandie-land Way". (to take a little poetic license ). It was Heraclitus who said that you"can't step in the same river twice", but I'm hoping to prove him wrong, at least for a brief 48 hour period. We've all lived through a very tumultuous and chaotic half century. It would be so nice to be able to go back and feel like a 50's kinda person again, if only for a brief moment. I didn't plan to make any comments in the register until I read Cloe Stradley's remarks about the passing of Donna V. Yocham. T! hen, I got all choked up and teary eyed and figured that we could each substitute Donna Vs name with any one or several of our mates that are on that other list...OR ..SIMPLY be grateful thaat 85% of us are still on the living list. So, it's time to say "hi" and "bye" once again before it's too late. See all of you there. I certainly hope they will have picture I.D.S, it's so embarrassing to walk up and have to say, "do I know you"? DEJUAN AB EL

After looking forward to the reunion, we will not be able to attend. Two weeks ago I had open-heart surgery. Which they say "Is a Good thing". Not only that, but Je Donn ended up in the same hospital for an angiogram, His turned out to be able to be control with med. We were released at the same time and both doing well. After 51 years of marriage I guess we DO DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER. Wishing all a wonderful time. And looking forward to the next one.

Congratulations to all who have gone above and beyond on the great website and a 50th reunion that is a huge success in the making. To Helen, Tricia, and Gene and others responsible, a BIG thanks! For a combined 59 years, Rick and I devoted our time and energies to planning fall reunions and homecomings for our students and ex-students we taught. So now that we’re blessed with retirement, and for all of us who have been unable to attend until this, our 50th, all the preparations have provided an impetus to get us there. It’s sad indeed that there are those who will never be with us again and that in itself is encouragement for everyone to make every effort to attend. We hope we'll see you there. What a great web site for AHS Class of 1955 and what a nice set of activities planned for our reunion. The event planning committee has done a tremendous job. Thanks go out to them! My wife Pat and I plan to attend! We married in 1985 and she has only been to Big A three times, so if you are there at the reunion, look her up and give her a big Texas howdy and welcome. It hurts so much to see how many of our class has passed on over the years. Yet, I agree with others' comments that they "are missed but not forgotten; they still live in our memories." Best wishes to all and hope to see you at our AHS homecoming.

Until now, I did not think I would be able to attend the 50th reunion. However, we have had to cancel a trip to Germany as my husband is having total knee replacement next week. Therefore, I will be attending some of the events alone. However, I look forward to seeing my former classmates. I know members of the committee have put so much work into the reunion planning, and I am grateful that there will be such a wonderful turnout. I also join so many others in commending Gene for a wonderful website. I have shared it with my family. Lastly, I am touched and sorrowful in seeing our deceased classmates. So many! May they rest in peace. Godspeed.

It has been fun to look through the pictures of my high school classmates. A lot of us started out in grade school(San Jacinto) together and then went on to Jr. High(Sam Houston) and then to Amarillo High, which, with the exception of Carver High, was the only high school in Amarillo at that time. I went to WT and then later to Michigan State Univ. I stayed in Michigan for about 10 yrs. and taught in the Math & Engr. Mech. depart. at General Motors Inst. in Flint. I got tired of the long, cold winters and got a job at Odessa College teaching Math & Engr. Mech. I stayed there for 33 years, retired and came to Louisville, TX. where I have several children and grandchildren. I got tired of retirement and am now teaching math part-time at Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch TX. I hope to make it to the 50th reunion. James

What an interesting morning I have had, browsing through "some" of the website. I will try to do the rest soon. Looked at the picture of the 40th reunion and Peggy Lowe Martin was the only one I recognized! She hasn't changed one bit. I have been mulling over whether or not to make this reunion and I just lack the courage to go without Gene. If he were here (to hold my hand) I would go in a flash, but somehow it just doesn't seem like it is something I can or should do without him. I have gotten in touch with a couple of friends (through information received in connection with the reunion) from way back when and we are in constant contact now. That is a huge plus. However, the loss of so many of our friends (and I seem to know most of those who are gone) is just so sad. I will not make the reunion, but will be thinking of you having a good time together. Enjoy yourselves and stop by or call when you are ever in the St. Louis area. While I am retired from teaching, I am on the go a lot, so leave a message!!!

I've been out of touch with Amarillo for so many years; actually 20 years ago I stopped there briefly with my children while on a cross-country trip. I've been living in NY (primarily LI) now for over 40 years. It would be great to come to the reunion, but do not know at this time if I'll be able to or not. If I don't make it, greetings to all my old friends. Would love to hear from you.

All right, so I’ve written before, but after reading your reactions to our lengthening memorial list, I’m compelled to write again. I know we must be sharing the same emotions. Fifty years ago, Donna V. YOCHAM Jackson was one of my closest friends. We assumed we’d remain so through the major events of our lives. However, we somehow lost touch in the busy-ness of living, and time rushed past us. I had not seen or talked to her in twenty-five years or more. Then a few weeks ago, I read on the Class Roster that she lived in Bedford, Texas, and I planned to phone her while on a trip to Fort Worth in June to make plans for the upcoming Class Reunion. I had not yet made that call, when on our second Sunday in Texas, by chance (?) I turned a page of the Star-Telegram and saw Donna V.’s unforgettable smile accompanying an obituary notice. My heart cried, “Wait, wait. I want to see you.” Later when I tried to sleep, I thought I heard her staccato laughter as she reminded me that she will be waiting for us at the ultimate reunion. At the memorial service, her sister Reba spoke of her fun-loving nature and continual pranks. That’s right. I remembered when she was in the top bunk next to me at camp in Glorieta. I couldn’t find my nightgown. She giggled and finally suggested that I look outside. It was flying like a flag for anyone in the world to see. I wish it could have always been fun and laughter, but she lived with pain—excruciating pain. She wanted to face pain as courageously as one she admired, Senator John McCain, whose words of condolence to her family were read at the service. Her son, Rick Jackson, told of his mom’s last words, “I—love—” That’s as far as she got, but it summed up her life. She loved. Donna V., we love you, too.

I've been in NYC since 1960, haven't been able to come to a reunion yet and may miss this one, too, but I'm very moved to read comments and get in touch with friends again. I'm sad and especially moved to learn of those who have died. RIP. Thanks for all your work in making it possible to communicate.

I found this site today and it brought back such heart tugging memories of you all. I hope to make this reunion which will be my first. BUT no one will know me. I've been gone so long. Have lived in New Orleans, Hollywood, FL, & spent 20 years in Santa Cruz, CA. My husband, Eldon, retired in 1988 and we moved back to Texas. Been here almost as long as in California. All my folks are gone so not much reason to come to Amarillo. But would love to see all of you soon!

I am Bob Crump's little "sister cousin", and I remember many of you very well. If any of you remember me, I was that little blonde girl who was always bugging Bob and his friends. I would love to see you, and would like to represent Bob at this reunion if you don't have a problem. I spent hours looking at Bob's annuals, went to many of the football games and track meets as a 3 year old, and remember many of you. I even have a video (poor quality) of "kid day" in about '54 or '55. Let me hear from you if you remember me. Nancy E. Barrow, M.D.

My wife (Barbara "Bobbie" Hines '57) and I settled in Abilene after I retired from the Army. We were stationed here for 5 years while I was assigned to the ROTC department at Hardin-Simmons. We made lots of friends and plenty of hunting and fishing is to be had nearby, so we decided to come back after my assignment to the faculty of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. I am still working, presently as a safety engineer for Northland Insurance Company. Bobbie retired about 5 years ago.

As always, I am in awe of how quickly life moves and happens through the years. It has been a delight to read the guest comments and view the Gallery. And, my heart was saddened by the loss of so many friends during that season of life. Many memories flooded my mind as I viewed the video clip of the fire that destroyed AHS. I thought of Mrs. Atwood and when she would stand outside her door and disapprove of your "boyfriend" holding your hand as you and he walked to class. There are so many more memories of AHS, of friends and events and I know all of us could "write a book". I do not know if I will attend the reunion but know for those who do, it will be a fun, happy time reminising those days and years spent at AHS. The website is great and very informative. Thanks, Gene Virga Lea Rigdon Oliver

You organizers deserve a lot of credit for bringing so many oldies together. And Billy Fred Jones deserves a round of applause for his financial manipulations that helped keep the costs down. I come with some trepidation. I don't think I've ever been around so many senior citizens at once. And I can't remember who might still be mad at me. So, I'm bringing a younger bodyguard that is only just 65, Dick Frazer. My wife is taking the opportunity to spend a month in Ireland. Sounds like a good turnout. I'm ready for action. John(ny)

We are looking forward to having the Friday evening pre-reunion cocktail/buffet at our home, Toad Hall, on the corner of Amarillo Blvd. and Western Street and seeing all our friends. Please come early by car or bus and don't forget to stop by the Cadillac Ranch and sign your name on your way to gather with those who come early to reunion at our home. We need everyone to come, so please call your friends and encourage them to meet you here in Amarillo for the 50th reunion!

Mostly I feel like the woman with no country. I was really the class of '56; but, graduated with the class of '55 and went on to college with you good folks. I suppose I shall just attempt to maintain connection to both classes. The website is such a good one and I've enjoyed seeing some familiar names, evoking some wonderful memories. My old official resume and the history of our law firm appears at www.JohnAAlbritton.com, even though I've retired from most all casework. Still spend a lot of time working on community projects and traveling and swimming with my four grandchildren. From time to time I see an old AHS grad here in Rockwall and we do sing the school song together. Best of everything to all of you.

As everyone has said, the website is terrific and I’m really looking forward to seeing y’all again – but I know that most of you have gotten so gray and wrinkled you won’t recognize me. Now, I’ve heard it said that time is a great healer, but when I look in the mirror, I realize it sure is a lousy beautician. Who cranked up the gravity? Why did they have to start making all the print so small? Why has my doctor become such a nag? Why are my clothes shrinking? When did my forgetfulness become non-selective? And when did everything start either drying up or start leaking? So much for growing old gracefully, right? It ain’t for sissies, that’s for sure, but I had planned on living forever and honestly, so far so good. So, let’s all have a grand time at the reunion and dance ‘til dawn – or at least 9:30! See y’all there! PS: And appropriate for this reunion, I have found that it is helpful to convert our ages to Celsius. That way we can all be 18 again.

Dear Class of '55, I am grateful for such a great website! Unfortunately, I will have to miss the reunion, thanks to a required medical meeting, but I will be there in spirit. I have been in private practice in Dermatology here in Amarillo since 7/1/69. They call it the "practice" of Dermatology because they're hoping I'll get it right someday! I will really miss seeing everyone, but since many of you still in Amarillo seem to get skin problems, I feel as if I have been experiencing an on-going reunion for many years when you trusted me enough to come in as a patient.
